Business Marketing Consultant for Owner-Led Businesses

I'm Dave Scott, a business marketing consultant for owner-led service businesses. I modernize the whole marketing system: website, advertising, lead flow, the AI piece, and the workflows behind them, all working together.

You run the business. You know the operations, the people, the customers. When you're that close to it, it's hard to see where the marketing dollars are leaking or why the phone isn't ringing the way it should.

That's where I come in. I look at your marketing the way a good mechanic looks at an engine. Find what's off, walk you through what I'm seeing, and put together a plan you can act on.

Diagnose first. Recommend second.

You work directly with me. No junior account manager. No rotating agency team.

Why Owners Hire Me

What makes this different from another agency pitch

Trust is the whole product. Every one of these is something you can verify against how the engagement actually runs.

You work with me, not a team

The person you talk to on day one is the person doing the work on day ninety. No account manager, no offshore team, no handoff after the sale.

Diagnose before I recommend

I will not quote work I have not examined. Every engagement starts with a Marketing System Review of the website, the spend, the lead flow, and the numbers behind them.

Accountable to real numbers

Cost per lead. Cost per customer. Return on spend. If a channel or tactic cannot be tied back to money, it does not stay in the plan.

Private proof, not public logos

I do not publish client names, screenshots, or revenue numbers. Owners trust me with sensitive business data because I keep it that way. Proof gets shared privately during the fit conversation.

Fit before contract

If the business is not ready for a consultant, or the problem is not one I should be solving, I will tell you. Wrong fit costs both of us. Honest fit protects the work.

One consultant, one plan

SAMG Inc. is the operating company. The consultant on your engagement is me, Dave Scott. One plan, one point of accountability, one voice on the phone.

The Scope

The eight parts of Business Marketing Modernization

Modern marketing is no longer one channel or one tactic. It's a connected system. Here's the scope of what I work on with owners and how each piece earns its place in the budget.

Website modernization

Your website is the front door. I rebuild it so it loads fast on a phone, reads at a fifth-grade level, and turns visitors into real leads instead of bounces.

SEO and AEO

I optimize for Google search and for AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. When customers ask who to trust, I make sure your business is the answer.

Advertising

Paid media with a job to do. Every channel gets a target cost per customer and a measurable outcome. No spreading thin. No vanity metrics.

Lead generation

A clear path from ad or search result to a real conversation. Forms that work on a phone. Follow-up that doesn't drop the ball.

AI use

Practical AI inside the business. Content, customer response, internal workflows. Applied where it saves time or wins customers, not where it looks impressive.

Business workflows

The behind-the-scenes systems that let marketing function. CRM hygiene, lead routing, follow-up sequences, the operational plumbing most owners never see.

Customer journey improvement

I walk your customer's path from first impression to paid invoice, then remove the friction that's quietly costing you customers along the way.

Practical marketing systems

Dashboards, tracking, and routines you can actually run after I'm done. Nothing fragile. Nothing that depends on me being on speed dial forever.

Common questions business owners ask me

If any of these sound like your business, you're in the right place.

What does a business marketing consultant actually do?

Symptom

You're spending money on marketing every month and you can't tell what's working.

Problem

Most businesses don't have a marketing problem. They have a measurement problem. Ad dollars go out the door, leads trickle in, and nobody can connect the two. That's not marketing. That's guessing with a budget.

Solution

I look at your business as one connected system. Ads, website, lead flow, follow-up, pricing, and people. I find what's making money, what's costing money, and what's quietly leaking. Then I tell you the truth and give you a plan you can act on this week.

How is a marketing consultant different from a marketing agency?

Symptom

You've hired agencies before. They sent reports nobody could read and results nobody could feel.

Problem

Agencies sell services. SEO packages, ad management, social posts. They get paid whether your phone rings or not. The person who pitched you is rarely the person doing the work.

Solution

You work directly with me, Dave Scott. Not a junior. Not an account manager. Not someone in another country. I diagnose first, recommend second, and stay accountable for what the numbers do after.

I'm spending money on ads but the leads aren't coming. What's wrong?

Symptom

Your ad budget is climbing. Your lead count isn't.

Problem

You're a small fish in a big pond. A little on radio, a little on Facebook, a little on Google, a little on a sponsorship. None of it concentrated. None of it measured. The budget is spread so thin nothing has the power to move the needle.

Solution

I call it Big Fish, Smart Pond. I look at every place you're spending money and figure out which ponds are actually feeding the business. Then I put more water into the ones producing better leads at a lower cost and pull back on the ones that aren't. One client went from $20,000 a month scattered across channels to $7,000 a month on the channels that were actually earning.

How do I know if my marketing budget is the right size?

Symptom

You set your marketing budget by what you can spare, not by what the business needs.

Problem

A budget that comes from leftover cash is a habit, not a plan. When sales dip, marketing gets cut. When marketing gets cut, sales dip harder. That's the loop most owners are stuck in.

Solution

Budget is built into the business model, not bolted on. Roughly 4% of gross sales to hold your market share. Up to 10% if you're trying to grow. I work backward from where you want the business to be in twelve months and architect the spend to get you there.

Why isn't my business showing up when people ask ChatGPT or Google AI?

Symptom

You search your own category and AI recommends competitors. Your name doesn't come up.

Problem

Search isn't search anymore. Customers are asking AI who to trust. If your site doesn't speak the language AI reads (plain answers, structured data, named expertise), you're invisible to the fastest-growing channel in marketing.

Solution

I rebuild how your business is described, structured, and cited online so AI engines understand who you are and recommend you when it counts. This is answer engine optimization, and it's where SEO is going whether you adopt it or not.

Do I need a brand strategy consultant or a digital marketing consultant?

Symptom

You're not sure if the problem is your message, your media, or both.

Problem

Most owners try to fix one without the other. New website with the same weak positioning. Sharper brand with the same broken ad spend. The pieces don't work in isolation.

Solution

I evaluate brand, digital, advertising, and budget as one connected machine. I fix what's costing you money first, then sharpen the message that wins the right customers.

Straight Answers

Marketing consultant questions, answered plainly

These are the questions owners ask me before they hire a marketing consultant. Same answers I'd give you on the phone.

What is a marketing consultant?

A marketing consultant is an outside advisor a business owner hires to look at the marketing objectively, find what's working, find what's wasting money, and hand back a plan the owner can act on. A good one stays accountable to the numbers after the plan is written, not just to the plan itself.

How much does a marketing consultant cost?

Most independent marketing consultants in the U.S. charge between $150 and $400 an hour, or work on a monthly retainer that scales with the size of the business and the work involved. A good consultant fits inside your existing marketing budget and gets paid back through the spend they stop you from wasting. Cost is a bad first question. Return is the real one. See my write-up on marketing consultant cost for the full breakdown.

When should a small business hire a marketing consultant?

When the business is doing real revenue, roughly $500,000 a year or a clear path to it, and the owner can feel the marketing budget bleeding without knowing where. Below that, free SBA and SCORE resources are usually the better first step. I'd rather tell you that up front than take a contract that shouldn't exist.

What's the difference between a marketing consultant and a marketing strategist?

In practice, very little. Strategist usually implies planning without execution. Consultant usually implies both the plan and the follow-through. I do both. I diagnose the business, write the plan, and stay in it long enough to make sure the plan actually works.

Do marketing consultants guarantee results?

Any consultant who guarantees a number without seeing your business is selling you, not helping you. I guarantee the diagnosis, the plan, and my accountability to the numbers we agree to track. The results depend on the business, the market, and how much of the plan the owner actually runs.

How long does a marketing consultant engagement usually last?

The Marketing System Review is a fixed-scope engagement that produces the diagnosis and the plan. From there, most owners keep me on a monthly retainer for three to twelve months while the plan gets built and the numbers stabilize. I do not lock owners into long contracts. If I'm not earning the fee, the fee should stop.

What's the difference between a marketing consultant and a fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO is a part-time executive who sits inside the company, owns the marketing function, and manages the team, the vendors, and the calendar. A marketing consultant is an outside advisor who diagnoses the business, writes the plan, and coaches the owner or team through executing it. Fractional CMOs make sense when a company has enough marketing headcount and spend to justify an executive, usually a few million in revenue with an in-house team or several agencies. A consultant makes sense when the owner is still the marketing decision-maker and needs an outside diagnosis, a clear plan, and accountability, without paying for an executive seat.

Written by me, Dave Scott, Business Marketing Consultant and founder of SAMG Inc. I've spent my career diagnosing owner-led businesses and rebuilding the marketing systems around them.

Consultant vs Fractional CMO

Marketing consultant vs fractional CMO

A fractional CMO runs the marketing function from inside the company. A marketing consultant diagnoses the business from outside and hands you a plan to run. Different chair, different job, different fee.

If you already have a marketing team and just need a senior head in the seat, a fractional CMO is the right call. If you are the marketing decision-maker and you can feel money leaking without knowing where, hire a marketing consultant first. Get the diagnosis, get the plan, then decide if you even need a CMO seat afterward.
